Making the Most of Link Exchange

If you are doing what most are doing, which is exchanging links straight across from site A, to site B, then you are not using link exchange to its full potential.

There is a commonly misunderstood concept about link exchange, and that is that most people believe that a link exchange is beneficial to their rankings. Although in some cases this may be true, most of the time, a link exchange is nothing more than a way to send traffic from site A, to site B, and vice versa. So if this is all that you are looking to accomplish, then continue exchanging links as normal.

For those interested in the SEO value of a link exchange, there are certain ways to go about a link exchange in order to make it beneficial to both parties that are involved in the exchange. The most important part of the process is having more than 1 website to exchange links. So be sure that if you are just running one single website, then you at least set up a free blog from an online service. The reason that you need more than 1 website is because you are not going to be exchanging links in the normal way anymore. When you exchange a link, the links should not link to each other, or should not be a reciprocal link. A reciprocal link does not have as much value in the search engines as a one way link. So what you need to do is locate somebody to do a link exchange with.

Once you locate another party who also has more than 1 website, then this is how the exchange should go:

You give the other party your link to your website A, which they place on their site A, and you give them the link to your site B and they place it on their site B. Then you take the link to their site A, and place it on your site B, and you take the link from their site B, and place it on your site A, (Illustration Below).

Link Structure

This type of link structure and exchange will not only benefit your website, but will also benefit the site of the other party just as much. Your link is now a one way link, instead of a reciprocal link. You have still exchanged links, and now have added another backlink to your websites portfolio!
