What Do You have To Say About Earth Day?
In case you don’t know, Earth Day is held annually worldwide; during spring in the northern hemisphere and during autumn in the southern hemisphere. There are two Earth Day originated by two founders. What is this all about? Earth Day is celebrated to encourage awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. Earth Day was founded by John McConnell in 1969, and United nations celebrates it each year on March equinox. Another was originated by Gaylord Nelson, who started global observance program as an environmental teach-in back in January 1970. It is also called Earth Day and celebrated on every April 22nd in many countries, including in the United States.
But the question is is this celebration really worth it and necessary? The same question was asked by some environmentalists, mainly those in the Bright Green Environmentalism Camp. The claim that Earth Day is there as to symbolize the marginalization of environmental sustainability, and that the celebration itself has outlived its usefulness.
It appears the reason some are having criticisms towards Earth Day because there are few who realizes and appreciate the Earth’s environment and there are more who wish to celebrate it just for the sake of having a celebration, without actually having deeper concern of Earth’s environments.
I know admiring and inspiring others to be aware and appreciate the Earth is understandable and that is what all of us need to do, but Do the celebrations worth it? Has the Earth Day celebration itself really outlived its usefulness?
