Forums 101: How to Start Your Own

The internet is a huge channel created for communication and the exchange of ideas. About 1.2 billion people around the world have access to the internet, so you can imagine how many websites can be visited, and how much can be gained from a download of information. Such is the reason why chat rooms, emails, blogs, and forums are popular avenues where people from all walks of life convene and communicate.

Forums have a unique feature that allows registered members to follow a main topic of discussion or thread, post in their comments, and even read about additional comments written by other forum members. In some ways, the forum is a community, where people freely discuss, inquire, and respond to issues and topics. Forums also have certain rules that members need to abide by, such as the nature of language, advertising or using a certain number of links, and others. These are only some measures that forums take to keep things running smoothly and in an orderly manner.

Another great feature of forums is that you can view the members who are online. You may also send and receive PM’s or private messages through your own inbox. You can add customizable features like photos, icons, and emoticons to your member profile, to allow others to get to know you better. There are forums that allow their members to receive notifications or special announcements from admin or other members via email.

Having known the convenient and practical features of forums, perhaps you have thought about starting a forum of your own. You will need to register a domain name, the cost of which can vary. You may own the domain name for a year until you wish to renew your subscription. Think of a domain name for your forum which is keyword rich and good for search engine optimization. This allows users who use Google or Yahoo to find your forums faster. After this, you need to get a web host so your forums has web space that makes it accessible to the public.

Determine a good layout for your forums. Use a color scheme that is appropriate, as well as images and fonts that make your site easy to view. In some cases, your web hosting company of choice will provide you with the tools to build your forum. Your web host should have PHP or MySQL on its server, as these are software that keeps the forum running.

Some experts on this matter say that the real work on establishing a forum begins when you get to invite people to join. This means you need to create content that is relevant, timely, and not to mention interesting enough for people to read and post comments on. You also have to determine other ways to make your forum sell, by advertising your links, posting in other forums, and the like. You need to gather enough people who will be interested to start their own threads, respond to hot issues, react, send messages, provide links, and more.
