Save Our Earth One Hour at a Time
Increased by a world of change and a dream to halt Global Warming, Australia had the vision of Earth Hour. This conscientiousness statement was inaugurated on March 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. As we can appreciate their stand against Global Warming, which has been present in the forefront of our society for years, we need the same tenacity from the rest of the world. On March 31, 2007 over 2.2 million Sydney residents and 2,100 businesses turned off their lights for one hour. As a result of this endeavor, they had a 2 ½ % -10% in increase of the energy saved across the city. To make this pertinent to our understanding, this is equivalent to one car being taken off the road for 5 ½ years.
As a result of Australians taking a stand on Global Warming, 24 other cities decided to participate in this years’ Earth Hour on March 31, 2008. Earth Hour is a campaign against Global Warming and the wasted energy we use in our world. The entire conception for turning lights off was to show that simple changes will collectively make a difference.
Simple steps that can be made whether once a year or everyday can include but not limited to the following:
• turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby or just turn them off
• Set air conditioner 1 to 2 degrees higher
• Set heater 1-2 degrees lower
• Use energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs
• Turn off lights when you leave the room
• Have one candlelight dinner a month
• Do something besides watch TV
Many may find this daunting and troublesome, but think, this action can include turning the lights off for one hour a year, then one hour a month, and eventually one hour per day – when your home. When making this type of sacrifice, our world can cut the use of carbon emissions and use less energy. The more energy we can conserve, the longer the world we know will be around.
If we are determined to make Global Warming disappear, then we, as a society, need to cut back on the amount of energy that we consume. We should commend Australia for taking a stand to stop Global Warming. Some may think that this statement will not be beneficial for our society, then maybe they have not heard the statement; it only takes one person to make a difference. Well, Australia and other countries and cities all over the world are now listening to the call for justice.
