Id, Ego and Superego Explained
Id is the Freudian structure of personality which consists of instincts that are individual’s reservoir of psychic energy. It is unconscious and has no contact with the reality, and what it mainly does is working according to the pleasure principle. Id always produce pleasure and avoids pain and unpleasant moments at all cost.
Imagine what will happen if people only have the unconscious id; the children being violent and mistreating others for pleasure will grow up without even thinking about putting an end to such behaviors! But we are not built just with id, our minds have ego, the Freudian structure of personality that deals with demands and constrictions of reality. Ego works according to reality principle. It helps a person exercise pleasure only within the norm of the society, otherwise, if it seems to be wrong to be done in reality, it will indeed find an alternative way. unlike id, ego is partially of conscious.
How does ego knows what is wrong or right? That is the job of superego within us that does the job. Superego is the Freudian structure of personality that deals with morality. Id and superego both do not consider reality, but superego helps consider whether the impulses from id can be used meaningfully in moral terms.
How do all of these work together? It is simple and this example will help you understand the different responsibilities of id, ego and superego.
Your Id: Sex is great and it gives pleasure and it is a must.
Your Superego: Having sex makes me feel guilty.
Your ego always finds the best way to resolve the conflict between your id and superego and for the above scenario, it will most likely say: Having sex occasionally with protection or birth control is fine.
