No More Keyboards for Computers

It seems that Microsoft Corporation’s Chairman, Mr. Bill Gates, is finding computer keyboards already outdated. He is looking at touch screens and verbal commands to create advancements in computers and in searching information via the internet. Mr. Gates is planning on replacing keyboards with speech and touch screens. This innovation is actually one of the bets that his company is currently working on. This is his message during the last stop of his farewell tour prior to his withdrawal from Microsoft’s day to day operations this coming July. Mr. Gates is finding a lesser role for keyboards in the future. Individual’s interaction with computers will be mainly via speech and touch screens instead of the conventional keyboard. This is what he is expecting to happen in five years time.

Microsoft’s vision five years from now is to generate the use of speech when searching in the internet rather than typing using the keyboard. He expects more users of the computer to practice this new technology which the company is trying to develop. This is what Mr. Gates told among approximately 1,200 students and educators of the Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburgh. Mr. Gates also regarded the use of the products of technology in several important subjects in schools and universities. He stated that the software which is being utilized particularly in the study of biology, astronomy and other branches of science should undergo specific advancements. This is because the subjects deal with a whole lot of information which calls for machine learning. This is to understand better the processes involved and what is exactly taking place. Mr. Gates finds this very essential in order for the students to deal appropriately with the data and to further enhance learning.

Microsoft Corporation is currently trying to establish tie-ups and partnerships with several universities where computer science is being offered as a course. Moreover, the company is also coordinating with the researches involve with other areas of science. According to Mr. Gates, they are establishing these strong ties with these sectors in order for Microsoft to understand “where new inventions are necessary”. Apparently, Mr. Gates vision is still set on achieving greater technological advancements. Microsoft’s future ties with the science departments of learning institutions as well as with various researchers mean that people can expect more innovations despite Mr. Gates’ retirement from Microsoft’s daily operations. Mr. Gates had planned to retire as the company’s Chief Software Architect by July. He is set to concentrate on philanthropy.
